Skye Seaglass the Story.

I live with my husband - Raymond, two dogs – Suzie and Tessa and a feisty little feline called Cloudy. We share our house, on the shore of Loch Bracadale, with visitors who come to soak in the scenery and do a bit of exploring.

The shoreline is diverse with caves, sea stacks, pebble coves and Sandy bays so naturally myself, dogs and cat walk, or scramble, along the shoreline on a daily basis and just can’t help picking up interesting things – pebbles, drift wood and of course Seaglass. Whenever I pick up a piece I always wonder where it came from and what it was. The area where I live is rich in history, dating back to Neolithic camps, there were once settlements beside the shore that are now ruins and an old estate house that ran a variety of businesses over the years, fishermen and pleasure boats but I am particularly lucky to live close to the site of the “ china plate ship wreck”. So whenever I find some unusual bit I imagine some grand tableware on its way across the Atlantic to a big house, I once found the most perfectly smoothed purple that was imbedded with bubbles, what else could it have been?

From Thursday, January 27th 1859
Yemassee of Charleston, child. Alternative name China plate wreck from Liverpool to Philadelphia was cast ashore on the rocks of Orbost on the west coast of the island 20th January………..and will have to discharge her cargo most of which it is hoped, may be saved, if the weather keep moderate……….2 days later however……suffered additional damage and the tide now flows over her. Only a few bales have been got out undamaged a considerable quantity has been landed saturated with salt and water……….noted later still….has become a total wreck.

Anyway back to the life storey bit, a whole jar full of beautiful beach gems from our lovely morning walks, family history of handmade presents and a Christmas or birthday looming ( can’t remember which) I found an old tray of beads that I had as a kid, some off cuts of copper electrical wire (we were building our house at the time) and started making jewellery. I took some to the local market and with the proceeds bought some silver wire and took it from there. The thing I love is that there is always something new to try and to learn not to mention the endless inspiration of the sea.

My sister in law has suggested that some people would like to be involved a bit in our morning walks, or interested in what is inspiring me today and what is being created next. If that’s you then click on one of the social media links below and I will do my best to take a photo a day and let you in on a slice of Skye. (Warning : will definitely include dogs!)
